For the past 12 years, I’ve spent the end of May packing away classroom materials and struggling to survive the last few weeks of school with a room full of antsy adolescents.
This was my first year as a District Literacy Coach, and I have to say the end to the school year was very different. There were no end of the year field trips or award ceremonies for me this time around, no hugging students, followed by a sigh of exhaustion when the halls were empty and quiet. Instead, I have spent the month of May swamped with meetings and preparing for summer professional development sessions for teachers. This has left very little time for me to pursue my passion for writing (as you can tell by the lack of blog posts lately!).
Despite feeling somewhat overwhelmed, I do have some exciting things related to writing coming up. I’ll be attending a writing conference in Nashville on June 8th. The following weekend, I have a book signing in Tompkinsville, Kentucky. I’ll be doing a presentation about Waverly with another book signing on July 16th at the Spencer County Public Library. I also have some other exciting events in the works, so stay tuned!
As for my writing, I am ready to start my next project. So many people who’ve read Waverly have said they can’t wait for my next book, and I have to agree! I am excited about the prospect of starting another novel, even though I know firsthand what a monumental task it will be to actually finish.
In the meantime, my summer reading list has been growing by leaps and bounds. I have been having trouble lately with setting aside time for writing because I have so many great books I want to read instead. Ah, the life of a bibliophile. At least it’s summer break, so I should have a little more free time. Right?
Happy reading! 🙂
